アーティスト to Pick: MNEK
読み方は「エメニケ」、本名を「ウゾエチ・オシシオマ・エメニケ」というこのアーティスト
若干２５歳ながら既に１０年近いキャリアがあり、有名アーティストとのコラボもヒット曲も多数ある
その彼がJoel CorryというDJ /プロデューサーとコラボした「Head & Heart」という曲が今週６週連続のUKシングルチャート１位から陥落した。世界情勢を背景にしたリリース冷えはあるにしても、６週間１位を取っていたとなれば、間違いなく今年の夏を代表する一曲だと言っていいだろいう。
個人の名義以上にコラボ相手として名前を見ることの方が多いMNEKだが、意外にも１位を取ったのは今回が初めて。
これを機にライター/プロデューサーとしても引くあまたの彼が手掛けた作品の中でも、特にアタシが好きなものを列挙しちゃう
Home Run
イギリスのオーディション番組「Xファクター」２０１１年版で４位に入賞したMisha Bというアーティストのメジャーデビュー曲。Misha Bが元々SassyでDopeなラップからバラードまでなんでもござれのすごい人だからこの曲も彼女の個性が色濃く出ているんだけれど、MishaとMNEKの相性が最高で、結果的に最高な曲になった曲（語彙力
チャートでは１１位と、「もっと評価されてもいいのに」という結果になってしまったし、しばらくして彼女はメジャーから契約を切られてしまって現在はMs. Lauryn Hillみたいなオールドスクールな曲を中心に歌う（これはこれでめちゃくちゃかっこいい）アーティストになっている。MNEKの初期作品の中で、今の彼が奏でる唯一無二のオリジナリティがこの頃からバリバリだったことを感じられる一曲。

2000年代後半から2010年代初頭にかけて活躍したイギリスのガールズグループThe Saturdaysのサードアルバム「On Your Radar」に収録されている楽曲。このアルバムの中にはこの他にもMNEKが絡んだ曲がいくつか入っているけれど、ガールズグループの中でも比較的バキバキなダンスサウンドでキャンピーな方向に振り切れている彼女達とMNEKの相性が混ざり合って最高なサウンドに昇華された一曲。曲をプロデュースしているXenomania（ゼノマニア）という集団（MNEKもキャリアの最初期に所属していた）はダンスポップを得意としていて、The Saturdays以外にもたくさんのアーティストに楽曲提供しているが、MNEKのダンス系サウンドとキャッチーネスの真骨頂、みたいな曲になっている。

まだMNEKが”開眼”する前にリリースされた６曲入りEPの中の一曲。音は当時からバリバリに尖っていてカッコいい。ちょっと聴いただけだと退屈になりそうなメロディのコーラスで、後半いきなり転調する力技はお見事。

今や唯一無二の存在感を放つまでに成長したUKガールズグループLittle Mixの４枚目のアルバムからのセカンドシングル。タイトなビートと小気味良い言葉の響きがクセになる最強なポップソング。Little Mixにとってもセールス的、アート面両方で大きな飛躍となった記念碑的作品の中で「アルバム全体の色」を決定付ける程にアイコニックな曲をMNEKがプロデュースしているっていうのは、何か宿命めいたものすら感じさせてくれる（は？）

このブログを読んでいる人にはおそらく説明不要な大名曲。キャンプでキャッチー、妖艶な出だしから曲が進むに連れて増していく切迫感。
2018年発表の曲の中で一番過小評価されているものだと断言出来る。新時代のアンセムはかくあるべし、というのを打ち出した傑作だと思う。
アルバムリリースが２年も前とはにわかには信じ難い。アタシは彼こそプリンス以来の稀代の天才アーティストだと思っている。そのプリンスだってデビューアルバムはアメリカでもイギリスでも１００位にすら入っていなかった。エメ似恵子にはこれに懲りずにどんどん良作を量産していってほしいと思っているわ。
アーティスト to Pick: Daniel Bedingfield
先日、実に６年ぶりにUKが誇る天才シンガーソングライターDaniel Bedingfieldが自身の名前を冠した曲を発表した（正確にはオーストラリアのエレクトロデュオHermitudeにフィーチャーされるという形だけれども、表に名前が出ていて彼の声がガッツリ聴けるというだけで嬉しい）。
2001年のデビューからこれまでの彼のキャリアの中で、個人的にベストな仕事っぷりだと思う曲をご紹介していきたいと思う。
If You’re Not The One

言わずと知れた、ダニエルのキャリア最大のヒット曲。日本では2002年にリリースされた『メイド・イン・マンハッタン』というジェニファー・ロペス主演映画のサントラにしれっと収録されている程度で全然馴染みはないのだけれど、アメリカやイギリスではもはやスタンダードナンバーと化しており有名アーティストが何組もカバーしているバラード。「君を恋しく思うあまり息さえつけない」「君の腕の中にいられる術はなかったのかい」と甘々な歌詞が、ダイナミックな展開のメロディーに乗って最後のファルセットで絶頂を迎える。かの辛口プロデューサーであるサイモン・コーウェルをもってして「これまで聴いてきた中で最も美しい曲の一つ」と言わしめた楽曲だけれども、どんな枕詞のこの歌の前では全くの不要。唯一無二の最高な大名曲。

上記の名曲と合わせてダニエルの１stアルバムに収録されているデビューシングル。原曲は２ステップのビートがかっこいいポップトラックなんだけれども、アコースティックになってもかっこよさが全く失われない、むしろ冒頭にバラード調のイントロが入る分一曲としての展開に幅が出来てとても面白いバージョンになっている。オリジナルアルバムに収録されているバージョンもいいけれど、AOLセッションバージョンの方が長尺で聴きごたえがあるからそれも最高。

デビューアルバムに比べるとそこまでヒットしなかった2ndアルバムだけれども、ダニエルのメロディセンスが溢れ出ている曲が満載で、けどヒットポテンシャルに欠けるのは聴いていてわかるので結果としてすごく歯痒い思いをした。その中でもシングルになり得る魅力を持ったミドルテンポのバラードがこちら。Wrap My Words Around YouやThe Wayなどのアップテンポなシングルも魅力的だけれども、コーラスに入る瞬間の独特な展開や彼の歌唱力などダニエルの魅力を堪能出来る素晴らしい一曲。
Holiness (Re-Vocal Version)
前述の2ndアルバムの10曲目に収録されていた曲をアレンジやBPMを変えて歌を収録し直したバージョン（YouTubeを探してもこのバージョンが見つからなかったので泣く泣くアルバムバージョンを貼り付けました）。雨上がりの清々しい空に向かって歩いていくような気持ちの良い突き抜け感を感じられる。テンポを落としたのに、それがオリジナルに比べて楽曲の持つポジティブなヴァイブスを増加させているちょっと不思議な現象を感じられた曲。The WayのB面にしか収録されていないけれど、この一曲のためにAmazonをディグっても良い価値があると思う。
"Every Little Thing" - Daniel Bedingfield (Official Track)
元々はダニエルがバックボーカルとライター（ウィキ情報なので時々バックボーカルだけになったりライターも兼務していたことに戻ったりする）として参加していた曲。Delirous?という名前のイギリス出身クリスチャンロックバンドのアルバム「World Service」の最後に収録されていたバラードを、2012年リリースのEPでダニエルが（セルフ？）カバーした。バラーディストとして定評のある彼らしい、キャッチーで明るい前向きな気持ちになれる楽曲。
これがリリースされた頃は「久々にダニエルが帰ってきてくれた！」という感動があったけれど、その後ここまでまたリリースが少なくなるとは思ってなかったな、、、
先週発表された新曲を聴く限り、元々ハスキーだった声が更にしゃがれていてもう昔みたいな綺麗なファルセットは期待出来ない気がしているけれど、これからも妹のNatasha、Nikola共々追いかけていきたい素晴らしいアーティスト、Daniel Bedingfieldの応援をよろしくお願いします。
